Hey,
I'm new on this site as well with fish...
I bought a male betta at walmart about two weeks ago.. I had him in a little bitty tank and recently put him in a 1 gallon tank.. I asked my questions there at walmart but they weren't very much help.. His tank has a air pump as well as a light .. His water got dirty a day after putting him in?
(1) Can i put other fish in with him? If so,What Kind? And How Many?
(2) Is there anything i can put in his water to keep it from getting so dirty so quickly that won't hurt him?
(3) How long should i keep the light on? I don't wanna keep it on too long..
(4) What kind of water should i use? I've heard different things about both tap and bottled.. I've been using tap water..
i think that is all of the questions i have right now.. I'm sure i have more just can't think of them right now. If somebody could answer them i sure would appreciate it.. Thanks

I wouldn't put anything else with him in a 1 gallon

No, nothing really helps besides making it look better. Best way to keep it clean is to not overfeed, and you can use a turkey baster on a daily basis to suck up uneaten food and his poo. With a 1 gallon, I would try to give him a water change 2 times a week, with the filter there, probably 50% would be fine.

(3) How long should i keep the light on? I don't wanna keep it on too long..

Normal light/day cycle should be fine.

Tap water is better than bottled water, but normally you need to add a declorinator or water conditioner. It is best if you can find out about your water from the city, or whoever your provider is. Best way just to be sure is to use a product that takes care of chlorine, chlorimine, and ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. I think PRIME is top notch, takes care of everything, and you use so much less of it than other water treatments, therefore saving you money with an exceptional product.

I went to get the water conditioner and the lady at the store told me that it woulden't do me any good to get it since its mainly based for tanks 10 gallons or bigger and its more trouble than it is worth so she told me to go and buy the bottled water. but i diden't i'm still using tap.. any ideas?

That's odd, I never heard of that before. I have two kind of conditioner (one came along with the hex 5 gallon) and they all works the same even though one is like 10 times the size of the other..

Any size of a tank needs water conditioner such as PRIME. No matter if it is a one gallon or a 125 gallon, they all have chloramine, chlorine, ammonia, nitrates and nitrites which needs to be neutralized.

I recommend Aquasafe or PRIME.

Hope I helped,
Skylar.

The smaller bottles of Aquasafe have a squeeze top and I believe it is 8 drops per gallon. Go for that ;)

thanks, i'll try the smaller bottles and see if that helps.. i need to put something in the water. i've been using tap water and he got parasites so i went and bought the medicine and put it in and his spot went away and now the spot is back
