In my ever changing list of possible fish for my currently cycling aquarium (180litres about 3.5ft long and 1.5ft tall/wide), I am currently considering some Angels and Keyhole Cichlids. There are a few bits I wanted to clear up about them as im a bit unsure:

- If I were to get two Angels and they both turned out to be male, at what age would they start fighting?

- Would a pair of females fight as well or is that just a male thing?

- I have seen the keyhole Cichlids classed as Middle/Bottom dwellers, do they spend much time on the bottom? As when considering bottom dwellers for my tank I was wondering if I should lightly stock the bottom layer to give the Keyholes more space down there.

- Would two male Keyholes fight the same as the Angels? I have heard they are a more mellow Cichlid but havent seen this mentioned.

- Lastly, if I were to get some smallish shrimp at some stage would the Keyhole / Angels consider them food?

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can give :D

Don't know much about keyholes I'm afraid.

However with the angels there is no guarantee that they will/won't fight regardless of the gender. all cichluids are tempermental and they have they're own character, while some will be docile and never bother anyone, some will scrap with anyone who comes near. All you can do is watch them in the lfs as much as you can to try and gague character, then have a back up plan incase it all goes wrong.

Angels will probably try to eat smallish shrimp, we took a chance and put some amano's in with our angel and it's OK, but the tank is very heavily planted and there's loads of hiding places. If angelis is hungry and happens to spot one he'll try and have a go at eating it.

keyholes are very nice fish so chilled out, have never attacked each other or anything else,

Angels

the angels may fight and may not (already said) just watch out. look at the most bonded pair in the tank. you may want to get 6 babys, wat 2 pair of then return the rest.

Keyholes

i kept my angels with keyholes they were great. get 1 male and 2 females, males have longer dorsal fins.

Angels and Keyholes together

the angels and keyholes in a 45g aquaria will be absoulutly fine.

do something like this :)

6 Angels, Return 4 once 2 have paired off
3 Keyholes, 1 male 2 females
6 kitty tetras
maybe some corys and a bristlenose plec.

Good luck. should work out fine :)

Thanks for the advice guys :)

This is pretty much what I had in mind, except I was going to go with either the Cory's or the Plec (not both) and a slightly larger school (8-10) of Tetras :)

Although with probably over a week left in my fishless cycle, there may still be some last minute changes ^_^
