Hiya,
I just wanted to know if anyone kept crystals in their tanks, like amethyst for instance,I know our LFS has rose quartz in with their goldfish - maybe with some of their tropical fish, i know a lot of stones arent good in tanks because they start to dissolve over time.... was thinking of amethyst because of its healing properties and one of our fishies is a bit sick at the moment - and we have him in a seperate tank from the rest of our crew... does anyone else believe in using crystals for their healing purposes in tanks?or even just because they look good..?
Im not sure whether it would be oki to put one in or not..??
HELP!

Yes Starry, I put crystals in the tank, like amethyst, rose quartz, jasper, agate, tiger eye, Aventurine, garnet, hematite, snowfake obsidian and rhodocrosite. They don't dissolve in the water n give a bit of colour to the tank as well!

However my tank's suffering from algae problems and I havnt got one algae eater that can clean away the algae in my tank yet. So now all of the crystals r covered with algae!!

The ph, gh, kh r all staying the same too (dunno if it's relevant to having crystals in the tank tho  )

Edit: Dont think u'll hav the same algae problem as me after having a look at ur fishies coz u hav Loachy! I had a CAE once n it's done a fantastic job! But it kept bullying n freaking other tankmates out so I've to return it back...

Thanx feline,
glad to hear that someone else believes in the usage of crystals in tanks, and that they dont dissolve, Ive seen them in the fish store in tanks , so I thought it should be okay - but wanted a second opinion, I dont know how it happened but one of our green tiger barbs got hurt , and he seems to be paralyzed in his tail, hes all bent and goes around in circles abit, he can swim okayish, and hes eating, so i really wanted to try the amethyst and see if it makes a diff for him, I know in the past ive had bad scrapes which have healed a lot quicker using the crystal. anyway fingers crossed for me :) and thanx for your advice - Ill keep ya posted on this one

crystals shudnt dissolve in water nor change the chemistry of it. i think the crystals that peopel are talking about are that dissolves on water are those that haven't been polished. They contain not the pure crystals, but some dirt, some limestones etc.
