ok, I am still having issues with sand getting pulled into the intake on the filters, I tried AC sponge things but all they do is clog the filter too

now my intakes shoot straight down and sit about 4 inches above the sand. there is an "extention" with a choke built in. I can remove the extention which will let the intake sit about 4 inches below the surface of the water, this should completely stop the sand from coming in.

will having a shorter intake reduce the amount of older dirtier water taken in by the intake, or is there normally enough current from two penguin 150's to move the water completely around

heres a pic of what i'm trying to explain

Sure, you could do that, or you could put a piece of sponge over the intake to catch the sand before it gets to the filter.

tried that with aqua clear filter insert foam, all it did was clog the filter. I wonder if dres socks would work.

You could try that too. I've tried netting, screen, nylon, & probably a couple other things I'm forgetting, all to try & keep fry from being sucked into the intake. They all clogged with fish debris. An ac mini or other cut down piece of sponge with a slit in it slid over the intake clogged less.

well sock didnt work, not enough flow into the filter to keepthe biowheel moving but it finally dawned on me, I have a choke on the top of the intake, this i think may help from pulling from the bottom so much and instead pull fromthe middle.
