Question on housing bettas...

I have 6 bettas - two are mine and the other four belong to my entire family. The two that belong to me live in tanks that are each about four gallons. The other four live in tanks that are about 2.5-3 gallons. All the bettas have enough room to swim around, but is it cruel to be keeping my bettas in plastic 2.5-3 gallon tanks?

If there's no other fish in there, I think it's ok. I keep my betta alone in a 1.5 gallon tank.
