a) What size container does your fish live in? - 2.5g round bowl
b) How often do you do a water change? - 1-2x a week, depending on how busy I am. Usually two.
c) How much of the water do you change? - 100% of the water. I scoop him into a little lidded cup that delivered some moss from a plant order, do the water change, fill up the bowl, pour the water out of his little container and let him slip into my hand, and gently put him back in the bowl. The process takes about 5 minutes.
d) how long as your fish been living like this and have you ever had any health issues with him/her? - All his life. One minor case of dropsy caught very early after he traveled last. A 3 day move from IL to FL. Nothing other than that.

Does anybody know of a betta fish that lived 2 years or more in a bowl - and if yes, what his water change routine was?

Alberich (see sig) is over four years old. The routine hasn't changed much, pretty much the same as above. I do keep and have always kept Pothos sprigs in his tank. I believe it absorbs any ammonia.

Sorry, I missed this. I was writing a thread for pinning over at Planted.

:hyper: YAY! :yahoo: You're the first one who actually answered ALL my questions! :hooray:

:kana: And the data is quite encouraging...

:flowers: THANK YOU!!! :thanks:

I was always hoping some day I'd have a reason to use all these smilies .... ;)

a) What size container does your fish live in? Vary from 0.75 to 1-2 G with Hornwort and Azolla. I also Find that it depends on the Betta. Some like more room to swim around others don't. The SB siblings Did not like anything over 2G (They Sulked). In 1G Cubes they are very happy, Swimming M/F both Blowing Nests everyday, eating hungrily. I enrich the lives of my Fighters by feeding live foods on a regular basis and use sprigs of live plants from the Danio and Guppy Barrels. The Sprigs come loaded with lots of insect/Larvea for them to hunt and eat. Also covered in Pest Snail Egg Pouches for them to eat when hatched.
b) How often do you do a water change? 1-2 a week - Scoop out change water and plop back in.
c) How much of the water do you change? 100%

Also I live in the UK and Only use heaters when breeding. As their cubes on the PC desk and the PC is never off they are kept warm from the ambient heat generated by the PC. Also it helps that they are near to the Monitor Heat Vents.

d) how long as your fish been living like this and have you ever had any health issues with him/her?
I introduced my Aunt to Bettas 3 years ago and hers are in 2G vases, they are still going strong. She does 100% Water change 1-2times a week

In england they do need heaters it's colder over here :good:
Depends on how you keep your house, even in the winter mine is plenty warm.

To keep a house that warm in england all year then even in summer we'd need the radiators on full
Not a nice gas bill

Bloomin english monsoon in summer :grr:

I'm sure i've heard of bettas living around 7 years,

The captain was at least 2 when i got him but i think he's older because of his bent spine, right old codger i think, plan on keeping him a good while yet :good:

Radish was not even 1 his fins were still small and mostly clear (there still growing at some rate)

I think the life expectancy of your betta depends on how old it was when you got it and how well it's cared for conditions, desieses contracted, temperature, water quality e.t.c.

I agree with Forestpisces. England isn't a good place for heaterless tanks or bowls. Our summers are terrible and winters even worse, they would never be warm enough and the temps fluctuate wildly throughout the day..

Yeah, but once you have about 10 tanks in the house (like some of you seem too...) Isn't it just cheaper to heat the whole room/house than run 10 separate heaters??

Heater only costs the same as a light bulb ;)

That and i live in a large and very old stone wall terrace that used to be an MPs mansion in the 1800s before it was split into 5 houses so heating is an absoloute bummer.

The bedrooms are always freezing in winter and as for the cellar :grr: freezing in summer!

Just kidding.... ;)

Thanks for the info Gill, by the way - appreciate it! :D

I have tried convincing my other half to do that as I am always cold and we could have more fish, he is being very stubborn though ;)

He might come around yet. If he knows what's good for him .... ^_^
