Hi *GONI*...

What kind of turtle do you have?

I have a Red-Eared Slider, *Squirt*... pictured below...

He's small (about 2 1/2")...First of all, I have him in a 10 gallon aquarium with good filteration...turtles are naaaasty!I feed him twice a day. You're supposed to only feed them once a day, the same volume as the size of their head (if that makes sense)... I feed him baby shrimp treats every morning. These are good for him because they are complete baby shrimps, shell and all. Turtles are omnivorous...however, the juvenile sliders are mainly carnivorous and they become more herbivorous as they become older. Anyway... at night I feed him frozen bloodworms that have been thawed in his water... (I use a shot glass... fill it up with his water and pop in a frozen tab of bloodworms)... he LOVES these!

Are you feeding them underwater? How often during the day? How much?

I also keep a small supply of feeder goldfish (minnow will work) in his tank... a coupld have disappeared... I can only assume that he's eaten them... but I haven't actually seen him do this.

Hope this helps!

ah ha this is the same sort of terapin i used to keep they are messy i had them in a 2 foot tank with a fluval4 the fluval 4 used to need cleaning out each week... they live for up to 30 years and can grow to the size of a dinner plate the females ar elarger than the males. best to go without gravel they like a large tank or a small pond but for the first five years of there life they would porlly be ok in a 10 gallon tank. for food you seem to be looking after them ok but they like a nice balanced diet . it needent cost the earth. you can get worms from your garden crickets also they like flys maggots (when you go fishing if you have any spare at the end of the day). i fed mine dry dog food soaked in a little water they will eat allmost anything. the main thing is to try not to over feed them. the tempriture thing is a big lie they will live happily in any tamp water we have them choking up the water ways of wales and let me tell you it is not 78 fareignheight here. there is allot more i could tell you about thease but i can tell ure bored and im late for work. they are hardy but look after them oh yea and they love to sun baith on a rock but they will need to be near water at all times.

edit the last guy was quite correct in mentioning that the shelss on the shrimp are good for them they need a little bit of clacium sometimes pond snails are also good for this. i went to the local fish shop and got whitebait for mine instead of feeder fish they like live fish but i think they like just about everything thus i fed mine dead fish. im shure the one that wont eat is prolly just a little shy of you. if he is retreating into his shell and making a hissing sound that means he is spooked best to leave the food for him to eat when he wants. i used to put some of the food out on the rock they will crawl out and drag it back into the water. if you are owrried that the other one might be eating all the food perhaps you should seperate them and leave him alone with the food see if he is eating at all. then get back to us. good luck and as i forgot to say earlyer welcome to the forum hope you enjoy it here.

Hello! My hubby's parents used to keep a turtle in the past. They fed the turtle with dried shrimps and it lived to 10 years until one day when his parents found he's not eating. The vet found a hole in its intestines  , caused by abrasion of sand and small gravels! This turtle ate sand and gravels as snacks :X n in time its intestine got eroded! But bcoz of old age and the risk of cracking the shell open during operation, it's euthanisied.

Btw, ang7880 your turtle is so cute!!

Thanks, Feline!

He's so fun to watch!

Oh, you're right, Feline!... you shouldn't put gravel or small rocks in your turtle tank...nothing that he could put in his mouth. Same thing goes for plants, fake or live. Unless of course you know that the live plants are not poisonous...so many are...(I've read) and turtles eat everything!

Good luck with your turtles, *GONI*!

Update us when you get a chance.

Cheers,
Angela ;)

most plants that you would put in your tropical aquarium are non toxic and perfectly ok for terapins i used to put all sorts of plants in with my red ears and none of them did any harm. oh one other thing occoured to me make shure they cant swim or slide over the top one of mine did and i never saw it again.

well i really dont know what kindof turtles i have because it was a present from my sister!! i feed my turtles 2 times a day and i clean it every 2 days!!well i a,m thinking now with this info that i am going to move my turtles to a 10 gallon tank, i am also thinking to give them the beef and the shrimp knstead of turtle bites!if i get the 10 gallon tank is it nessesary to put a filte?

thanks jamnog for your help!!feline, i am sdo sorry about the turtle but do i need to put a big rock in the tank so they can be near the surface???? in my little plastic tank or bowl i have a little plastic plant i already took it out just incase theyt eat it or choke on it!! i also think your turtles are cute and i a going to take a picture of my turtles so you can see them and see where they live sence the beginning !!Thanks everybody for your help!! :p

aaawww whatta cute pic of the slider ang
I bought my daughter a map turtle a few days ago & I've been reading up on them for the past few nights but...none of the web sites I've found say how deep the water should be. It has it's own 10 gallon tank (with gravel  , should I remove it?) and a few large rocks. I put in a little under gravel filter, will that be enough do you think? I couldn't figure out how to hook up a mini bio wheel because I only have about 5 inches of water in the tank, so it wouldn't reach...so should I make it deeper?

I had a turtle when we lived in Florida and he lived for years and years with nothing...gravel & a tank, that's it, but I don't want this one to die on my daughter because of something I did or didn't do...any info?

thats the ticket im shure your terrapins... red eared sliders will live for thirty years and grow a sbig as anything. the larger one is prolly the female the smaller one will probably be the male. they are difficult to breed in my experience so dont worry too much about more littluns. i did have them in a 3 foot tank for a while. it might be an idea to get them a pond outside later in their life say in about 3 years time.
