Question About Stainless Steel?

I just obtained a 55 gal tank and the top plastic peace the runs horizontaly is brocken off. If I would replace the peace with a stainless steel rod would that effect my fish in any way?

Stainless steel is quite safe. Just do check it is proper stainless and that it doesn't go rusty!
