I got my first Pleco yesterday, it's a Candy Striped Pleco. I'm not used to how these type of fish feed and I was wondering how long it usually takes them to eat the Pleco Wafers?? He'll just sit on it for ages sucking on it, is this normal?? Is this how they eat them?

Thanks, just wanted to make sure he was eating ok. Don't want him dying of starvation when I spent all that money on him!

Oh I forgot to ask...

How long can the wafers stay in the water for and how often do I feed him one?

I assume you have some other fish in the tank too? If so, I'm sure they will all tuck in (one your plec is finished & let go of the wafer) and there won't be leftovers. Unless you overfeed. If feed everynight (6 nights a week). But have quite a few catfish and feed a variety of wafers and pellets.
Hikari sinking pellets, Hikari Algae wafers, Hikari Carnivore pellets and JBL Novotabs (the Novotabs being the favourite amongst all fish - followed by the carnivore pellets). :good:
(Some pellets remain in the tank for a few hours as they care quite hard and the fish have to actually rasp on them for it to break down as they are fairly hard and compact. Overnight is definitely not good though.

The other fish are not interested in the wafer at all. I put one in last night and it was still there this morning so I took that one out. When should it be taken out if it hasn't all been eaten?

That's odd - all my community fish tuck into all the wafers. What exactly are you feeding?
Ps: yes, if there's still some leftovers by the next morning, definitley remove it. And it's always best the feed the wafer just before or at lights out.

mm odd that your other fish don't like it. Though I haven't fed those before, it's a good brand.
Perhaps experiment a bit and try some others too (swap around to give variety) that everyone will enjoy.

Yeah I was going to get some different ones, then I can swap them around :) Thanks for your help! :good:

Candy Stripes also go strongly for fresh squash. I feed mine algae wafers, carnivore wafers and bloodworms every so often. They seem to be strongly ominivrous. Mine went from a sucked in gut when I got him to a nice flat one within a few weeks of a good varied diet.
