hi all

ive had my LR in my tank for about 9 days now and ive noticed rusty brown covering appearing on some areas of the rock. is this normal?

Sorry to sound blunt but it's all basic stuff that should be covered in your research before you get the tank wet. There's a few too many threads covering the same thing over and over again which is why the pinned threads are there for reference. There's not much point starting another :D

Highly likely to be diatoms, completely harmless and natural for a maturing tank.

cheers nav just rang lfs and he told me much same said should settle down in time and after water changes using ro water said something about phosphates to but thanks anyway

Did you use Tap Water for the initial fill

If you did you will find the algea will linger longer as Tap water will feed it phosphates

yes did put tap water in first but asked man at shop where i got some marine salt from if that was ok he said yes as long as i used normal water treatment chemicals bah wish i used RO water now anyway going do water change next week and put phopsphate cleaner in filter

must say finding the whole thing facinating yes i'm making mistakes but sometimes best way to learn and i also must say this foram is a great help and i appreciate those who run it and those who offer their advice

well done chaps

Some salt works better with tap water as it will contain trace elements that are stripped out of RO water. However, it is still advisable to use RO water as the benefits of no Nitrates & Phosphates make up for the loss in trace elements (which can be added back in anyway).

I agree that sometimes the best way to learn is by your own mistakes but when that mistake costs losts of money and innocent lives it's better to let someone else make it and tell you all about it :p
