Hey everyone. I am going to start adding live rock to my tank. I have the proper lighting now and I guess adding live rock is the next step.

I have about 75 pounds of base rock right now and I was wondering how much live rock I should put into my tank. I'm want the live rock to spread on my base rock.

Will this work? If so how long will it take?

Base rock will rarely become live, what sort of rock is it, you may be lucky?

You're best getting hold of as much live rock as you can. In my nano tank got a 25kg bag of ocean rock and used some smaller slabs of it on the bottom as foundation then purchased 2 large pieces of live rock. After about 3 months with the powerheads pointed at the LR to blow over the ocean rock, ALL of my ocean rock is covered with coraline algae. It's not completely "live" but it looks a lot more full of life than the white blank rock it started off as and I'll be using all of this rock in my new tank!

Is this for your 75 gallon? I would want to add another 75lbs of live rock. I have always heard the live rock will start your base rock. I put two pieces of dry lace rock in my tank about a year ago and it does not show signs yet of anything growing on it. But I put it in there to make the live rock more prominent.
