I always wanted an eel! Can you please advise me on what kind of eel to buy? My tank is 1.21m / 270L. As I understand it, most eels will grow to big for my tank.

Peacock spiney eels (Macrognathus aculeatus) are common in lfs and only grow to 12-13" so would be suitable for your tank, there ae other smaller eels but they are rare imports.

Before buying a eel be aware that they will eat smaller fish (up to 1/4 the size of the eel) and will cause chaos in a planted tank as they dig their way through the substrate. They can also be very fussy to feed and most will only take live worm like foods.

Edit: By the way, regarding your question, eels are great...great escape artists! So atightly covered tank is required or you will find a dried up eel in the other room the next morning.
