I am cycling a 3 gallon tank for a betta at the moment. I have another filter for a bigger tank (10 gal.) that I want to get up and running. Would it be ok to put the bigger filter in the 3 gallon tank and run it alongside the smaller filte in the tank that is still cycling, or would that mess up the cycle? I am already showing nitrates in the 3 gallon, and the nitrite is spiking at the moment, ammonia is zero......

Also, if I can put the bigger filter into the 3 gallon, how long do I have to run it before it is cycled? Can I just take it out and install it in the 10 gallon and put fish in right away?

No you put it in the right place just everyone is at work atm in the UK and US. It won't effect the cycling process much but I would use a daily dosage of ammonia method and keep ammonia above 10ppm for the first week then around 5ppm a week after ect.
