Question about CO2

I keep reading about people using this in their tanks.. what is the purpose?? Ive never heard of this before.. Are there certain types of tanks and fish that you use this with?? sorry for all the questions, Im just curious..

By the way, the CO2 is only if you have live plants. If not, there's no beneficial points of adding it.
