Do I need to cut a hole in the cap and put the airline through there?

Can't I just turn the bottle upside down and stick the airtube in from the top?

The bottle is turned upside down so that's it's in a V shape, so that the eggs will fall down to the airline and get moved by the bubbles. The eggs need to be kept suspended in the water, not resting on the bottom.

I think with the way you are suggesting you'll find a lot of eggs getting stuck on the bottom and they wont hatch

I understand that there needs to be a V shape.

My question is that after you flip the bottle upside down to create the V shape, can't you just put the end of the airline at the bottom of the V shape from the top or is it necessary to cut a hole in the bottom of the V and insert the airline there?

You don't have to put the air line in from the bottom, you can use the air supply line if you unplug it from the pump. I use a turkey baster, It's faster.

Just remember that if you do that, you're gonna have a hole in the bottom of the bottle. What are you going to do when filling up the bottle and emptying it?

Hey BigC - is that a picture you took yourself?

I know theres lots of info online but I've never fully understood it and this is the first pic i've seen of an assembled unit...

could you PLEASE explain a few things for me?

like... there's an airline coming out the top of your picture, and then theres the airline down the bottom too ...... which one has the airstone connected to it? what's the other one for?

everything else makes sense :)

The one at the top has the airstone attached to it.
The bottom one is to drain off the water and brine shrimp, hence the need for the clip

Your invention is great!

I have to hatch a lot of BBS for seahorse fry so I need a quick, easy to clean model. I use a 2 liter diet pepsi bottle. I cut it in half. The top, with the lid on tightly and no hole, turns upside down, and sits inside the bottom. The bottom is really only a holder to keep the top upright. I then use a piece of rigid airline assembled to the flexible kind to a air pump.

This way, every time I have an empty DP bottle, I can throw the other away. They seem to get crudded up in a few hatches, and bacteria can grow if they are not really clean.

Are you hatching for fry? I have a few more tips....

Yeah I posted it before on TFF. The concept has been around for years. I used to hang 3 of these in the window of my fish house.
