As you all know I have a 14 gallon divided betta tank. 2 of the boys who fought a couple weeks back having been living next to eachother with a piece of black plastic over the divider. On the bottom there is about 2 inches where they can see eachother. For weeks now only the red boy would do the occasional flare and my blue boy wouldn't even care now though since last night all they are doing is flaring flaring flaring and trying to get to eachother. :S

I put plants all along the bottom of the 2 inch clear opening hoping it would distract them but they kept sqeezing in small spots and flaring still. This morning they were still at is so I finally put one on one side of the tank and the other on the other side. Hopefully they will chill out. But why all of a sudden did their moods change? Or is it like what I always hear Bettas are unpredictable??

Perhaps they just didn't like each other. Separating them gives them a chance to be with betta they don't yet have a serious grudge with yet.

Maybe it was just luck that they didn't see eachother till now???
You could try building up the gravel to cover up the clear part of the divider...
