i'd really, really, really, really, like to get a african cichlid. specififcly a electric yellow cichlid. but can the get along with angels?

Everything I have read on African Cichlids (and right now I am in the process fo researching before setting up a tank, so its been quite a bit), has said that in general, African Cichlids are agressive fish and not meant to be in a standard community tank.

Something else to consider: African Cichlids thrive in a high pH, high KH water. Angels tend to prefer soft water and a lower pH. These fish have two very different needs. What is your water's pH? Everything I have read so far says that the MINIMUM pH is 7.5, or else you will need to raise it with baking soda.

What size of tank are you considerign putting this fish in? What other tankmates are there?

Both of these fish are cichlids, but they come from two different continents and have different needs. I'm sure both could adapt to a neutral pH, but generally african lake cichlids are more aggressive than most new worlds, so mixing these two may not be a good idea.

oppositearmor, I think that you should do a lot of research on whatever african you choose, ask some questions in the african cichlid forum, and try to set up a new tank. I think yellow labs (Which I am assuming "Electric yellow cichlids" actually are) can be housed an a 20g long species tank, and are fairly hardy, having them in a separate tank would prove to be much better than mixing them with angels

Simple straight answer NO you cant mix angels with African Cichlids. If you want to know why read this thread http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showto...=0&#entry848847

African Cichlids should only be mixed with other African Cichlids and "some" species which come from the same waters as them such as a few of the Synodontis species catfishes and African spiney eels.

Hi
Have you considered s amarican dwarf cichlids.
I'm considering them at the moment to mix with discus.
Options macmaster, cockatoo and rams amoungst others, I think they grow to about 3'' max.

I wouldn't put them with Angels. Africans just tend to be to agressive for anything but other cichlids and common plecos.

Today I went to a new pet store while i was out of town, and began talking with a fish guy who obviously knew alot about fish, and was suffering from MTS. I asked him what he tought about combining tiger barbs and african cichlids, and he said no. Since angels are more mellow and prone to agression than tiger barbs, I would say your answer is a DEFINATE NO.
