i'm thinking of maybe getting this plec for my tank once it has cycled and matured for a while, the question i am asking is if it will be ok in my size of tank, its a juwel rio 125.
thanks
scott

I found this info on it:

Minimum Tank Size: 200 litres
Diet: Omnivore
Origin: South America
Temp (C: 22-26 C
Max Size: 8cm
Family: Loricariidae
Temperament: Peaceful
pH: 6.5 - 7.0
Care Level: Moderate

So, not knowing the size of your tank in litres, I just put this up, if your tank is more than 200l then according to this info your all good to go...If its less then well, the answer is obvious

Hope it helps

P.S in looking for them, the pictures I saw were beautiful! What a gorgeous fish!!!

EDIT: I typed into google the name of your tank and it says its "Volume: approx. 125 Litres" so if its true then it dont look a good outcome!

oh well, just thought i would ask, really beautiful fish, anyone got any recommendations for my juwel rio 125?
thanks
scott

Id have to disagree with Dave, not sure where you got that info but its only one source. Its a 3 inch plec and I would say it would do very well in a 125, its not known to be territorial as the similar king tiger plec so I dont think the large tank size comes from that aspect. It does need a certain amount of meat in its diet though and its plant safe.

Personally I would give you a thumbs up for it however I would suggest you try and upgrade your filtration from the standard jewel internal if possible, their not the best filter in the world IMO but I think if you got an additional internal one and filled it with as much bio stuff as possible that way the jewel one will take care of the mechanical and chemical stuff as well as the biological cycle but then you have one decent internal one just dealing with the bio load of the tank. I think with the extra filter you could consider a trio of these and if you can breed them your in for big money ;)

Which brings me onto my next topic you could probably expect to pay somewhere in the region of £25-£35 unless you live near hull in which case I can tell you where to get one at a steel of a price ;)

thanks for your info, really happy to hear that,my tank won't be ready for a while,i believe it's the bioflow 600 thats in my juwel rio 125

ah right do you not have the jewel internal still in there or is it cut out?

Ah right yeah thats the jewel one is the box like siliconed into the tank? That filterhead has a 600 liter per hour turnover which is roughly 6x an hour on your tank which is nice for regular community fish but for stockier fish you need to be as close to 10x as you can IMO. If you can get a Fluval U2 or U3 that should top you up to what you need I think they are about £22-£27 but having 2 filters is always a good thing as in the case of one failing you have a back up :)

:good: cool glad to help, but yeah with the extra filtration I would stick at a max of 3 small plecs in there. I had a 125 before my upgrade and I had a 135 and a 235 but the 235 had a fight with my filter in my new tank before the inlet was on and lost :( So now I have a 124 which is rather nice :) getting a seccond 135 on saturday as well hopefully. Good luck with the tank!

I live near Hull and I've wanted one of these beauties for ages . . .

if i did decide to get this plec, could i have two of them in my tank, and has anyone got any idea where i could buy them, reckon i would need to order them online

Where abouts are you from? Like I said if you get a second biological filter in the tank I think it would be okay to have 2 but its just the amount of poo they produce, plecs are very messy fish.

2 will be abolutely fine in there, in fact you could hold more that 2 in a 125 tank quite comfortably.

Hypancistrus are small and not particularly messy plecs.
