Quarantine Tank?

I have a 10 gallon tank and a 55 gallon tank both cycled and livable water. The 10 gallon tank I keep just a couple guppies in to make sure it stays livable.

I have heard the term 'quarantine tank' several times, but I have never heard exactly what they are used for.

Can anyone tell me all the uses of the quarantine tank and what the process is when you do use it?

ie...
Put new fish in there before adding to the main tank?
Put sick fish in there for meds?

The two reasons that you listed are my top two. Other possibility is for fry or a breeding pair...
