most quarantine tanks are around 2 foot long for small fish that grow to 2-3 inches. If the fish are bigger (say 6-12 inches), you need a tank that is at least 3ft long or bigger.

Yes obviously i need a fair size for a silver. She is palm size now. Ive bought a small 12 litre tank but am worried about isolating her from the shoal as they are very protective of her

what sort of fish is it and why are you quarantining it?

if you have a fish the size of your hand, get a 40-100 litre plastic storage container and use that as a quarantine tank.

As above - if you have a local homebase depot near you they sell them and they are not expensive. Got one last year for exactly same purpose.

I actually think that the tiny qt tanks people use probably kill a lot of new fish. It's a problem - we lack space and money and want to quarantine, but if we cut corners, we defeat our purposes.
I figure a qt should be a size the fish could live in for a few weeks, even if the tank isn't of a size they could grow into.

I keep small fish and use 40ltr and 60ltr clear tubs. In Canada, IKEA has good deals on the former and Costco on the later. They let you see the fish and look for the problems we're qting against.

Yes it was too small she waS better off in the bucket but the cats would have got her. I think i made a few mistakes but think she was going to die immenently. Even it came down to temperatures of water fluctuating. It seems like it was more of a tumor on her mouth otherwise unmarked

I never Qt fish, fish only get sick if they get stressed. You need to put your fish in the tank that will give them the least stress possible, which is most probably your main tank.

Yes i dont normally but i had been treating the tank for so long but she bever fully reciveted it would go down then come back every time i changed the water then it wouldnt go at all. I didnt want to over medicate the wholetank and the more sensitive residents and we all know that fish will try to eat a sick fish by nipping them
