How many Ram cichlids are recommended as a school in a community tank? 3 or 4?

They dont school, but the amount is dependent on tank size? So what size tank do you have, also what other fish do you have in it

it's a 46 gallon tank, don't have any fish yet, waiting for cycle. But I plan on having some barbs, cory catfish, a pleco, and some other type of schooling fish

In that case, I would stick to two, either two females, two males or a pair.

If they are old enough to breed the best way to tell is that females normally have a red belly.
