I have been told to keep Cory's you should have sand for there barbels safety.....But my LFS and Walmart both keep there's in aquarium pebbles, I would like to buy some Cory's from them is it OK or should I try to find a shop using sand......Kevin

There usually not in the tank for very long so it should be fine. Were I got mine they were using gravel and there all fine. I would check there barbels out before bying them though! :good:

If the corys barbels look short/eroded, missing, inflamed or have growths of any sort on them, then avoid buying the corys. If they look healthy though they should be fine- barbel damage from keeping corys on rough gravel usually happens after a long time so most lfs's don't bother with sand as they figure they will only be keeping the corys for a short time. You should definately opt for sand in your tank though if you are planning on keeping corys :good: .

Gonna put the sand in the tank first.......Don't like buying fish from Walmart but they have Albino cory's that my daughter loves....Anyway how long should the barbels be, or should I just compare the fish an buy only one with the longest barbels? I know you guys say to buy 3 cory's does it matter what combo of three, can I get a Panda, skunk, albino, bandit combo? As long as they are all the same adult size...

Here are some pics of my corys, sorry some are not very clear, but they should show you what a good healthy set of barbels looks like on corys as well as healthy corys in general :) ;

The corys should have barbels in both the upper and lower part of the mouth- each pair of barbel should be the same length as the one next/opposite to it, and the barbels should thin out at the end and not be stumpy or short- there should be an even number of barbels on the cory as well :good: .

cory groups should be the same so 3 bronzes or peppered's you cannot mix the types sadly...and the barbels should be clearly visible and healthy looking

Thanks for the help guys, can I put 6 cory's with my 8 neons in a 10US tank??? Or just 3?

Sorry to hijack, but similar question to yours.
Is it ok to use small round gravel with no sharp edges? Not sure I want to go down the sand substrate route, but definatley want to keep corys.
If I do need sand, has anyone seen any black sand in the UK, I saw some fine grit, but that had sharp edges.

Hijack over, sorry
Stu
