hi, i have a veiltail betta male and wanted to try my hand at breeding him. my lfs only sells crown females so my Q is will they breed with eachother?
i no all about breeding them as i red over 30 articals about it.

Sadily you dont know every thing by just reading articles, or you would already know the answer!!!!

If you want to breed them firstly you need to think to your self do u have the correct food for the pending fry your gonna have, micro worms take several days from a starter culture befor their ready and micro eels take much longer.
Brine shrimp need a hatchery and good aeration and only take 24 hours to hatch, but you need the eggs befor breeding idearly, Also you can only feed these from day 5 after free swimming.

Also do u have a breeding tank ready?

My sugestion is make sure u get every thing ready and then give it a go.

Also yes course they will breed, their all the same fish.

I totally agree
Yes they will breed, but it's plenty of work. You'll get veils and combtails, so unless you have a pet shop that would take possibly a 100 or more bettas, you're not ready to breed.
A good site is bettatalk.com. Go to the breeding page, it has lots of awesome info.

I really can't tell you you can't, but please don't. Have you ever been to a petshop where there are a bunch of veiltails sitting in cups, some dead, in polluted water? We don't need any more of these. YOU will be contributing if you breed that veiltail. Let's face it, you can't sell 50 fry. Who are you going to sell them to? The petshop? They'll just be stuck in cups. Your friends? You have over 50 WILLING friends? On Aquabid? Nobody buys veiltails there. To us? You aren't going to get fifty of us to pay shipping, when we could rescue a mistreated betta out of a cup. Keep them? Have fun cleaning all those tanks. Furthermore, he's probably too old. Pet shop fish are often 1+ year, and about then they lose their fertility. Can you buy a 10 gallon, a 29 for growout? Can you ship in BBS and MW? But come on, many people who breed want to improve the genetics of the fish - make them hardier, prettier, pricier. What do you want to do? Practice skills? You shouldn't do that on bettas. Will you be able to condition the parents for two weeks? Find matching colors? When all of that doesn't work out... will you accept defeat?

J.K. sadily you dont like the idea of breeding betta's, but if the person is propley prepaired then it's not a problem, Over the years I've hade many different numbers of fry, when i was young i was lucky to rear 10 fry to adualt size, last spawning was over 300 fish!!

I'll only buy from a breeder and never a shop as the imported stuff is terable and in the shop's they should be propley cared for! if not then complain, dont wine on a website where nothing will happen.

If i did not get into breeding then i dont think I'll of got mad into fish like i have over the last 20 years

I'll say give it a go, but dont aim to rear more than 10-15 fry as if you get that many your be lucky as truthley the first 2-3 spawning done even get past the hatched stage, but what i'm saying is make sure your ready.

i have a friend that will take all. and yes i have a tank set up, a 10g, and have a bunch of jars that will be there grow out jars before they go to friend. and yes i have a microworm culture and 1lb of brineshrimp eggs ready to be hatched.

and i figure i would start with these then go to a hm or pk pair to breed.

I'm speaking from experience. Half the time when people try to do that they don't succeed. I did all the proper measures, and I still didn't. I'm just trying to be serious here, there's no point in sugarcoating everything or encouraging this.

10G is a little small but ok if your but expecting much, how ever if you do get load then they will so be to many and extra rearing tanks will be needed.

Good luck and ignore these dogooders who keep the betta imports going by buying poor imported stuff and not buying quality home breed stuff!!!! Strange as this is keeping the trade going which is the opposite to what they are trying to do!

i have alot of 1g+ containers around that i can use IF i get some fry.

but what if you get 5 males and 50 females!!! your need more space if your not carefull.

My suggestion would be to wait, see how many babies you get, and buy a suitable sized growout tank... anything 20+
