I really want a python, but I know that my housemate (who's terrified of anything remotely like a 'germ') would complain non-stop about the idea of 'dirty fish water' going anywhere near the kitchen, let alone actually down the sink. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to sell it to him?
Promise to clean after you use the sink for that purpose?
Regarding the dechlorinator, you should always use it just in case imo, because while aeration will drive off chlorine, it will not drive off chloramine. Just add the treatment after the drain, before the fill. Dechlorinators are basically instant.
Pythons make water changes ~so~ much easier, you will never regret the investment. Socrates - you may need to get the "universal adaptor" to hook the pump up to a garden faucet, it should come with a "standard adaptor" that works on normal kitchen/bathroom faucets.
