Hi I got a python type device to help with water changes - just did my first one and it's been a disaster. Some of it was me (probably all of me) but just wondering if anyone can give some advice...

It's the JBL model (this one) and I got it because it's cheaper than the Python and had a range of tap screw fittings which I liked as my tap has been hard to find fittings for.

So here's my list of things I found hard or that went wrong:

  • The clip for the pipe - just no way am I trusting that to stay in place. The pipe is super loose within it - or am I missing something? Does anyone else use a different type of clip?

  • When I started the syphon I ran the tap but the flow out of the tank was quite slow and it didn't really pick anything up compared to a regular gravity syphon
  • But what the syphon did pick up blocked the mechanism connected to the sink which meant when I tried to refill the tank it sent water down the pipe to fill the tank up...
  • On my third attempt with everything cleaned out and the tap now running on a higher flow the syphon was quite good but then... I heard running water and the sink was overflowing...
  • Cut my losses at this point and just accepted a 25% water change so started to fill back up
  • To fill back up I have a tap on the end of the pipe that I can turn off until I get to the tank having turned the sink tap on. When I release the tap on the pipe I get a big release of pressure which shot water all over the room. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

All in all, my other way is a bit more labour intensive but not significantly, this was probably one of if not the worst water changes I've ever done (the only other one I remember is when I plumbed an FX5 the wrong way around). At the moment the system may go in the bin... but also not underestimating that I've got something wrong.

Here we go again. The completely useless Python and its imitators will be praised and vilified . I'm in the latter camp.
The python is REALLY good. But most of the copy cats make cheap replicas that are just bad...

Maybe this will help?

This is really good thank you - I think it kind of proves to myself it was mainly my panic haha. The clip he has is different to mine and just being able to have the pipe secured while you go between tap and tank would calm things right down. I think that's what I need to work out - eg if it is clipped in I wouldn't need the second tap to fill the tank and wouldn't get the splash that was half the problem.

Emptying I may just need to syphon with a tube and bucket to start with to get the worst of the waste out - he pointed out the lowish flow in the video too.
