Ok i made a mistake... my 20 gal community tank currently consists of
- 1 Silver Shark (yes i know it gets too big... I'm ashamed of myself)
- 1 Bn Plecostomus
- 3 Glass Catfish
- 4 Priestella Tetras
- 1 Blue Ram (was a pair but the male died)
- 1 Spiny Eel (its a peacock spiny eel so it doesn't get large
- 1 Purple Spotted Gudgeon (its about 2 inches in length right now)
and... *sighs*
- 7 Neon Tetras...
i was buying a bunch of neon's and i noticed this gudgeon in the corner of my eye... so i instantly thought "wow that fish looks cool" the pet store owner told me it would be fine with the neon's so i bought it.
i bought 11 neon's +1 that was already in the tank and now I'm down to 7... the body's aren't there in fact i cant find any body's at all. I've only seen 1 dead one attached to the filter intake. but the purple spotted gudgeon looks happy...
anyway how big of a tank do you need for just one purple spotted gudgeon? or am i better getting more than one? i have a 5 gallon tank and another 20 gallon tank in my garage but all i need to do is convince my parents to let me set up one of them... if i can set up the 20 gallon ill make a semi aggressive community and buy some live bearers to breed as food to feed them
i think ill take the spiny eel and silver shark back to the pet store at some stage

he finished the last one off today. oh well should have known better. serves me right for impulse buying...
thanks anyway guys...

if its any consolation they are great fish as they get bigger and yours will be growing quickly after that meal

the peaceful tank i was aiming for has been shattered by it... though it is an Australian native which is my preferred biotope so i guess in a way i get something i want from this...
oh well, yet another mistake including the ammonia spike that i had a few weeks ago... took out half my fish tank but i cleared it up and decided to restock my fish tank... glass catfish are good but one isn't eating so im concerned about that... shall i buy some bloodworms for the gudgeon? hes not quite big enough to eat feeder barbs yet which is the only feeder fish that my LFS stocks...

I've found that these are not picky fish, they'll eat anything, bloodworm, flake, silversides, mealworms, other, smaller, live fish, so you don't have to bother purchasing or breeding feeders. They interesting characters, but they are bullies, so take care what you keep it with. I kept mine with a Senegal Bichir and the bichir was terrified of her. In a 20g I wouldn't bother with getting more of them, the gudgeon will be happy enough on its own and if you have more you'll just end up with fighting, especially in a smaller tank. They get to a good size, so more than one would be pretty crowded looking, anyway.
