Hi,
Any advice on reducing nitrogen levels (currently 8ppm), using Seachem Purigen for two comet goldfish in a 140ltr tank.
Water changes might not be enough but, am worriued about removing tannins.

Thanks

What part of the 'nitrogen' is 8 PPM? I'm going figure nitrates as I would think that if either ammonia or nitrites were at 8 PPM your fish would not at all be well... If it is actually nitrates that are at 8 PPM it is nothing to cause concern.

Two questions...
1) What exactly are your water parameters including ammonia, nitrites nitrates GH and KH?
2) Why are you worried about removing tannin? This is just for my own curiosity. ;)

If ammonia is at 8 ppm, tannin is the least of your problem. Depending on your PH the water can be very toxic atm.

Are you doing a fish in cycle ? if it's the case you need to start doing water changes and dose starter bacteria each time.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I have re tested and nitrate levels have reduced to near 0, after two water changes over the last 3 days. I hadn't realised and was still in panic mode.
The tannin removal had worried me, simply due to trying keep the aquarium environment as natural as possible, in not stripping everything, while still supporting the health of the fish, that's all. I'm just learning.

Why did you feel you needed to reduce the nitrate level? 8ppm is not high.
