Hi,
I'm having troubles trying to cycle my tank. Long story short, i'm doing daily water changes to keep my ammonia down at about 0.5ppm.
My main problem is the fact my filter media isn't mature enough. Thanks to this wonderful forum, one of your helpful members is posting some mature stuff down to me!

My question, though. I'm currently running Seachem's Purigen in my filter. Is there any chance that is removing some of the ammonia from my tank, and causing it to not provide enough ammonia to feed the bacteria?
Should i remove the Purigen? I have recently removed the carbon i was running in the filter, if that's any help?

Aww, you're very welcome!


I'd take the Purigen out when you put the mature sponges in; if you're still getting an ammoinia reading, it's obviously not doing what it's supposed to for some reason.

You've been a massive help, both myself and my fish are eternally grateful!

On a different note, i've also been using a product (recommended by my LFS) called Stability, again, made by Seachem (I guess the Seachem rep done quite well down this way!). Is this doing any good/harm? It claims to be a 'New Tank Stabilisation System', but i'm not entirely sure what, exactly, it does.

I dont believe Purigen removes ammonia directly, but it absorbs organic waste which will produce ammonia. Here's what it states on the Seachem website....

"Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. "

The Seachem Stbility is supposedly live bacteria that will start off your bio-filter. Some people seem to have had results using bottled bacteria; other pople have found them useless as the bacteria die off in the bottle where there is no oxygen or ammonia for them to feed on.

Carry on using it if you want to; it won't do any harm, but you'll find that most experienced fish keepers don't use anything in their tanks except dechlorinator.

Plenty of water changes using dechlorinator and testing every day for the first few weeks is the best route IMO.

Right, i'm going to stop using Stability, i've been doing daily water change, so i'll keep that up until i get a 0 ammonia reading.

And await some 'kindly donated' mature media!
