Hi, what size/quantity of fish are you transporting and on what length of journey?

In reality it would be fine to use normal air, to prove it our weekly fish orders come from London to Shropshire and the fish are all bagged in atmospheric air and they all arrive safe, and i would guess exactly what importers use to transfer their stocks overseas.

i would like to transport them different distances depending on who buys them, only in the uk though, would prefer to use pure oxygen as i have been told that it gives the fish a higher success rate of surviving their journey, they would not be in a box for longer than 24 hours an would be in poly boxes with a heat pack

what species are you sending?
at this time of year temperature is going to be far more critical than oxygen levels as even with a heat pack the temperature will drop far quicker than the rate that the o2 will be used

im not planning on sending them in winter, i am going to be sending live bearing species. thanks for the help so far, jack.

2 main sources in the UK are Air Products or BOC, you will need to sign a contract with either. IME AP are marginally cheaper, but have fewer outlets.

you will also need the correct regulator, hoses etc.

A while ago, certain pharmacies used to do low pressure containers of oxygen complete with masks for asthmatics to keep on their person. Might be worth an ask.

Is there any cheeper / easier alternative? for example small canisters that can be posted?
also, would it be safe to send a fish without pure oxygen?
Thanks very mch, Jack.

trust me if the fish suppliers can send fish around the world in bags of air then i think you'll be ok

so it is definately safe for a fish to be in a bag with water and natural air (not pure 02) for up to 24 hours?

thanks for all the help people, this seems like a good forum

that is provided you have adequately size fish bags. with regards to quantities of air you only need around 1/4th of the bag filled with water with the rest being air, it is best to fill the bags using an air pump in a warm room

Just so that you know it is done both ways, most of the LFS I know of just tie the bag with 'air' in them, but one place I go to specialise in Koi and goldfish, and those fish are always placed into bags, with probably 50% water, and then pure O2 put in the other half of the bag. I guess they use O2 because of the reduced 'air' volume in the bag, because of the amount of water they put in for the fish. (whether this was to dilute waste etc during travel I don't know, it's just what they did).

On that note actually, it seems people also advise starving your fish for 1 or 2 days before they travel to minimise the waste they produce whilst in transit :good:
