The little guy is only around 6.5mm. The line behind his eye seems to have formed somewhere between 3mm to now. Before they he had all vertical bands... well at least as well as I could tell since they were very very tiny. I currently can only find one of these fry... but I believe I have a total of 2. The little guy was nearly impossible to photograph so please forgive the quality of the photo.
Here is one of the possible 8 parents of this baby.
Here is the story behind the Puntius Denisonii fry.
As of late I have been rather busy so tank maintenance has slipped to some degree.
The tank they were bred in is a 125 gallon tank that is connected via a 150 gallon sump to a 220 gallon tank. So essentially from a shear volume perspective they are part of a 500 gallon system.
Last week I had the time to do some maintenance on the 125 gallon tank. The tank holds quite a few fish and has a ton of java moss in it. The java moss took over a good section of the tank and under it had a decent amount of debris. I then removed the java moss and rinsed it and suctioned out most of the debris under the java moss.
I noticed at that point that some of the debris moved like fish!! Turns out it was really tiny Puntius Denisonii fry. I only found 2 fry at that time. At that point I put back the java moss and stopped the maintenance.
I have completed water changes on the system but have left the 125 tank alone as far as gravel vacuuming and so on.
It appears as if I have 2 fry... currently I only see one swimming around but it's possible the other is hiding.
The tank held
8 Puntius Denisonii
2 - L264 Leporacanthicus joselimai
1 - Three Beacon Pleco
Several Bushy nosed pleco's
12 or more Botia Striata
6 or more Botia Rostrata
1 Horse Faced Loach
1 - Pearl Gourami
So as you can see... I have plenty of fish that would love caviar which is what I think happened to the rest of the eggs. I did not even know the fish spawned so I didn't get to see it happen. And the reason I believe it is a Puntius Denisonii fry is due ot the general shape and some of the marking plus I do not own nor have I owned any fish that would have similar fry.
As for water parameters
78F
80-100ppm nitrates
250ppm Total Hardness
120ppm Total Alkalinity/Buffering Capacity
PH was less than 6.4
As for the camera I use to take pictures of my fish
Nikon D200
with a
Nikon 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF DX VR Lens
The 8 adults were all purchased from 2 local fish stores at 2 different times around a year or so ago. As for being wild caught I have no idea I could find that information out.
If you have any other questions just let me know.
