Hi guys,

just had a clean of the tank and a slight re-arange. Ive noticed that the flow from the pump doesnt seem as good as it was before, ive had the tank about 6months, and have never touched/cleaned the actual pump. Its a juwel vision with the heater/pump/ filter all in one unit in the right hand corner.

Do the actual pumps need cleaning?

Surely it cant need replacing after 6 months? Thanks for any help.

Matt

Give the sponges a gentle rinse in some removed tank water, plus clean the pump impeller and its cavity to remove algae and/or limescale (latter usually comes off quite easily if you fill the cavity with vinegar for a couple of minutes before using a thin bristled tube cleaner or alike, rinse well afterwards)...

Jobs a good'en!

Whenever I clean a filter, I also clean the impeller and the well that it sits in. Regular maintenance of the impeller and its well are essential to proper pump performance. The clearances between the impeller magnet and the housing for the electrical coil that drives a typical aquarium pump is very tight so that the pump will be energy efficient. That means that it takes very little in terms of particles to stop the rotation completely. It is fortunate when you catch things before that flow stops completely.
