ok, what is the deal with puffers????? i've heard they are brackish, i've heard they are freshwater. i've heard they eat anything in the tank with them, i've heard they can go into a community tank. i need to know this.......
i have a two or three gallon tank and i want to get a puffer or two and have a wee little puffer tank, however, if they will go in freshwater, and get along in my community tank, i will scratch the small puffer tank idea and use it instead for cichlids.

Some puffers are brackish, some puffers are freshwater and some puffers are marine fish  .
All puffers are aggressive, some more than others, the fahaka puffer is considered one of the most aggressive fish on earth and will eat anything in their tank, bit by bit if its too large to swallow!! Puffers are notorious fin nippers and shouldnt be kept with any fish that have long fins or are too slow to get out of the puffers way, the best tankmates for puffers are more puffers (although some species hate the sight of each other and will fight to the death).

For a 3 gallon tank i wouldnt suggest more than one dwarf puffer as they are territorial, i believe there are both FW and brackish species of dwarfs so youll have to be careful which one you get.
