hey i am going to buy a pair of fig 8 puffers i have never seen to fig 8's so pretty any way i was talking to the bloke who owns the shop and he was saying that i wouldnt have to add salt to the tank for quite a while because of the size and that they keep their puffers in fresh water in the shop is what he is saying true or aload of bo**ocks?

yes, figure 8 puffers should be kept in lightly brackish water for pretty much their entire lives. they'll be ok in freshwater for the few weeks that they're at the shop, but any longer than that and they become more prone to being sick and developing fungal infections.

you can't just add random amounts of salt, however. you'll need a hydrometer or refractometer to measure the salinity of the water.

pm a mod to move this topic to the Brackish section. they'll be better able to help you there.
