what puffer would be recomended for a 40 gallon? i dont want any that will grow to over about 6 inches.
and preferable would like more than one.
also, which puffers have spines?

Either some South Americans or a bunch of dwarfs would be good for a 40 gallon freshwater tank. GSPs or Figure 8's would work in a brackish.

That shouldn't matter since if your puffer puffs up that means it is very stressed out (or sometimes I've read about people seeing their puffers puff up just because they can) and if you purposly try to get your puffers to puff up it stressing them out a lot.
