So my wife has asked about a puffer several times and all of our tanks are somwhat community so puffers are not an option. However I got a five and a half gallon tank at my auction last weekend. So I was curious if there was a more active puffer that would do well in that size tank(by himself). Also would prefer one that does not require brackish water if possible as I have never set up or delt with a brackish tank in any way. I think learning it on a fragile 5 gallon envrioment that can shift in seconds is just the wrong way to go.

Just figure with the stores near me selling the bubbling sponge filters for a couple dollars I could set this tank up with a heater and filter for like 15 bucks. so with what I spent on the glass for 20 dollars I will have a filtered heated tank to stick between our computers :D.

would prefere not to go pea puffer as most say they just hide all teh time.

Dwarf puffer would be the only option. Every other puffer either likes to roam in larger tanks (even the pea puffer), puts out even more waste than a DP, grows larger than a DP, and probably most importantly cannot be kept in such a small tank due to their somewhat intelligent mind, of which they will quickly get bored of their small environment and start pacing the glass and become stressed out. I had 2 dp's in my 10 gallon and even still (planted and such) saw them pacing the glass. (of course i added more plants and rearranged to re-interest them in their surroundings. Also mine, and im sure many other past or present dwarf puffer owners will say that DP's are fairly active and Ive always seen mine zooming around the tank.

I don't think any puffer should be kept in 5gal. As stated above they are generally inquisitive and need room to explore

Okay, I Will do research on dwarfs and see what I can find. Try and decide if I want to attempt one in the five and a half gallon. I was concerned it may be too small figured I would see what others that had kept them thaught.

honestly id even say no to putting one in a 5 gallon... their just active and will get stressed in such a little tank as that, not ton mention their messy eaters and will probably cause water problems from left over food and their poop.

Then again that's just my opinion, just keep looking around

honestly, if you find any info saying that 5.5gal is enough for any puffer, I would argue that it is wrong.

5.5gal is only really ever seen as suitable for a dwarf shrimp, small snails or a Betta fish, possibly some micro fish - but not any puffers.

Yeah thats what I am finding. I purchased it with the intention of it being a hospital tank/ quarentine tank for when I snag the Occasional individual fish. My wife realy likes puffers though so I figured I would see what people thaught. Perhaps when I Upgrade the tank my bichir is in I can shift other tanks and turn the 29 into a puffer tank.
