I bought two puffers today. They were labeled as Leopard Puffers T. fluviatilis. I thought that the markings of the fluviatilis were more figure eight like. I am thinking they were mismarked and are really GSPs.

Here is a link to a pic of one of them (warning large photo, I haven't yet sized it down... don't click if its a problem for you)

I don't have a problem either way, but am I right... were these mismarked?

thanks

If the markings are more figure 8 like its probably a figure 8 puffer (Tetraodon biocellatus). Also you should know that most puffers are brackish and if you don't have them in a brackish tank they will not stay healthy and most likely die.

Here is a link that has info and pics of a figure 8 puffer

well, the link to your pic seems to be missing so :dunno:

have you looked at www.pufferlist.com? fluvitallis and biocellatus do look really similar, and while both are brackish, fluvitallis grow 3x larger. :/

another possibility is t. schoutedeni, which is freshwater puffer that goes by the common name of "leopard puffer". t. schoutedeni has red eyes and a dark, mottled back with a pale underbelly.

T. fluviatilis comes in two forms, one that looks a little like a F8 and one that's spotty like a green spot. ( but other wise doesn't look much like one)

However the fish in your picture is almost certainly a greenspotted puffer tetraodon nigroviridis. I'm almost 100% certain.

Whichever it is, both species do best and are anecdotely easier to maintain in brackish water and t. nigroviridis will often not survive without salt.

Thank you for helping confirm what I had though.

The store had them in FW so I will be slowly increasing the salt content over the course of the next 3-4 weeks to BW (the slow acclimitization is best, correct? or is 3-4 weeks overkill)

thanks for the help

Probably a tad late, be he looks exactly like my GSP's I bought last month :)
