one of our customers at work bought a puffer a few months back from us and it's teeth are now getting over grown, she came in today asking about it so i said you would need to trim them.

I offered to get some info on how to do it so here i am!

snails are only good as a preventative and won't solve the problem in hand.

she also mentioned it won't eat snails anymore, so suggestions for foods to keep it beak down that it can handle at this small stage would be great aswell.

is it an SAP? i've got an article saved at home (that was written by PufferPunk on a different forum) about trimming an SAP's teeth. i'm not sure if it would apply to everything, but :dunno:

i'll edit it in when i get back.

--EDIT--
whoops! got beaten to it! :p gj erised.

I'm pretty sure it's a SAP. at the time i wasn't fish house manager so the idiot of a collegue was doing the ordering and getting anything that seemed "moody" and then continued to sell the fish to unsuspecting customers.

sounds like just what i need.

cheers.

one of the big fish publications last month had a big section on it. Might be worth nipping into a decent sized WH smiths and seeing if you can find the article before new issues come out! I think Takashi Amano is a guest contributor to the magazine, and I can't remember it's name! It wasn't PFK or Total Fishkeeper though. I remember that the article said about anaesthetic via clove oil first (a very small amount) and then clipping it. I hope thats some use!

Trimming Puffers Teeth

Sometimes it will be necessary to trim your puffers teeth, when the teeth are preventing your fish from eating or food is getting stuck in their teeth on a regular basis. South American puffers in general seem to require this procedure on a regular basis (sometimes every 6 months) but most other puffers, if fed shell food regularly, shouldn't need their teeth trimmed. The following excerpt was posted by a long time puffer owner and is the simplest and least stressful (for the puffer as well as the keeper) of any I have found:

" I filled 2 Coolwhip containers w/tank water. Put 3 drops of clove oil (next time I'll try 1 drop) in 1 container. Added the fish. Within 1 minute the fish was laying on it's back. It looked dead. I took the fish out with a net, (as to not harm it's skin with the oils of my hand) & held it through the net. I clipped it's teeth with cuticle nippers being careful not to cut it's mouth. I placed the puffer in the container of fresh tank water. I could see it breathing. After 1 minute it had righted itself, 2 minutes it was swimming around, 3 minutes it was back in the tank swimming like nothing had happened. Repeated with other puffer & all is fine with them today. This all needs to be done as quickly as possible, as clove oil can also be used for painless euthanasia. That's why I will try 1 drop next time

Yeah that was the one I meant! It's a great article and I regret not buying the magazine.

Yup, that's whay I wrote it & included step-by-step pics! I'm pretty sure Pufferpack got his info from that.

I use one drop clove oil to 1 pint water. I have used 1 drop to half a pint in the past, but I find one to a whole pint better because the fish comes round quicker afterwards, but is still completely under while the teeth are being trimmed.
