I have a figure of eight puffer fish (about an inch long) kept in a small freshwater tank with a sand bottom.

I have been thinking of getting a catfish to each up all the scraps of food the puffer leaves. I feed him frozen blood worm and some shell fish occasionally.

Can anyone suggest whether this is a good idea and what sort of fish would be a good tank mate? I was thinking of a cory maybe??

People keep telling me they are both brackish and fresh... some tell me they do better in fresh and some tell me brackish... what about a goby if I make it brackish then?

should I make it brakish?

figure 8s are okay in fw as babies/juvies, but need to put in bw as they become adults. keep them fw, and you won't be keeping them for as long as you could if you switch them to bw

if you make it a brackish tank, a couple of bumblebee gobies would probably do well in there with your puffer depending on tank size of course

I've read that bumblebee gobies can be put into freshwater... could I introduce them at juveniles aswell until I get a bigger brackish tank setup for them?

There are two species of bumblebee goby - one fresh, one brackish. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to tell them apart and your lfs will undoubtably have them labelled wrong.

For the most part though, the brackish ones are more commonly found. I suggest you follow the advice the other members have given you and transfer your F8 to brackish. Then you can definitely have your BB gobies as even the freshwater variety will be happy in brackish conditions.

Please do not get any kind of catfish as they are very intolerant of salt.
