I have a figure of eight puffer fish (about an inch long) kept in a small freshwater tank with a sand bottom.

I have been thinking of getting a catfish to each up all the scraps of food the puffer leaves. I feed him frozen blood worm and some shell fish occasionally.

Can anyone suggest whether this is a good idea and what sort of fish would be a good tank mate? I was thinking of a cory maybe??

figure 8s are brackish fish when they reach adulthood (you were aware of this??). that pretty much means youre out of luck for a catfish. ghost shrimp and other feeder shrimp, while they will be eaten eventually, in the mean time, make great clean up crew in puffer tanks.

I keep getting mixed replys when I ask whether this fish is brakish... when should I start adding salt... like I said it is about 4-5cm? what about a goby?

As already said figure-8's need brackish water when adult (sorry, i don't know when they are classed as adults :/ ) but in the meantime you could get some banjo catfish. You don't see them much as they will hide under the sand during lights on but after dusk/lights out they spring up and scavenge anything on the floor. I have a GSP with 4 of these guys and it's a good mix as the GSP doesn't bother them and i don't see them much which leaves the focus on my GSP :D
