ok guys,

having been truely inspired by johnlabbe's wounderful TOTM winner(from another site) from a few motnhs back
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/tanks/index.p...ner&u=23962 ((i hope i am able to link this forum, i think i have see it linked before here, huge apologise mods if not))
i would like to do somehting simerlar, i have a spare 30gl tnak which is what his appears to be form the link above,

have many Pseudotropheus saulosi are practical in that tank and in what kind of ratio?

i perhaspe should add my experiacne of keeping fish, espcailly cichlids is limited, i have and mixed community setups for about 2 year, and also keep a breeding pair of Neolamprolugus birchardi since around january of this year.

Thanks Guys

Personally id think that you could do a 1 male to 4 females in that tank nicely, without overstocking issues. Make sure you avoid more than one male though.

What are the dimensions of the tank??

my guess would be if long enuff 2 M + 6F as long as there is plenty of rockwork and adequate filtration :D

Then 2M and 6F is the way too go, just make sure you have plenty of rocks in the tank to break it up...

BTW. where did you get the suggested ratio from? another UK site or a US one?

:D

Oh BTW, if you are getting a species tank, then you have two choices in my opinion

1. Get all the fish from one source and don't sell on the fry as they would be in bred and saulosi quickly look rubbish when inbred

or

2. Get your 8 fish from at least two different outlets, therefore mixing the bloodlines of the fry produced, so you can either keep them or sell on the surplus mixed blood fish.

Oh double BTW.. Try and not mix Saulosi with Saulosi Red Corals, as Red Corals are a man-made fish and the females are more orangy :S

If oyu need any advice, just PN me - only too happy to help another Saulosi lover :D :D

thankyou!

i got the ratio forma us based forum...which im not sure i can link really, i have already ocne in this topic,

2 males 6 females seems great with lots of rocks,

if your Uk based, any ideas where i can track them down in the NW?

to see the pic of the one that inspired me you need to follow link in first post, and chose 2006 winners form the drop down menu, and its the third one down cant seem to link right to it for some reason the Tnak by John labbe

hopefully this one will work!

Hi, I have just set up a Saulosi species tank.
Mine is a 75 uk gallon, 90 us gallon tank and currently has 2 males and 6 females which will hopefully be 4 males and 12 females soon.

With regards of where you can get them in the UK, I got mine ordered from Maidenhead Aquatics. I think they have branches throughout the uk. All of there stock is great.

My Tank

thanks ash...i think madienhead are manily down south sadly...but there is one quite near me where i got my birchardi form. thanks for mentioning it i had forgotten it was there!

I'll send you some links - personally i would not get saulosi from MA's if you are looking fro good proper saulosi :good:

There speaks the budding purist

not at all.. I'm simply putting my point across like everyone else does

from the 6 or so MA i have been that stock Saulosi - some stock proper opnes, some stock the coral reds..

..all the fish have poor genetic characteristics (broken stripes) mixed number stripes ie 4 one side 6 the other)

For £7.0 per fish you can go alot better imo, thats why I've sent Dawn a list of stockists i would recommend based on mine and other malawi keepers i know personal recommendation.

Exactly, there speaks the budding purist. Must remember to go along to my MA and check out the stripes on the fish.

That is a very sweeping statement about MA especially after poor Ash has already said he bought his Saulosi from there. He must be feeling a tad deflated after reading your post. You cannot say all MA don't sell 'proper' Saulosi. Define the word proper. Or are you just saying all fish at Maidenhead Aquatics are rubbish?

I'm sorry but re-reading the posts and you will see...

''personally i would not get saulosi from MA's if you are looking for good proper saulosi ''

i should clarify that proper saulosi are ones which have yellow females and not orange ones ie the Coral reds..

''from the 6 or so MA i have been that stock Saulosi - some stock proper ones, some stock the coral reds..''

hence some MA's have stocks of the yellows, some stock the Coral Reds...

..all the fish have poor genetic characteristics (broken stripes) mixed number stripes ie 4 one side 6 the other)

This is a misleading statement when re-readI am refering to the saulosi i have seen in the 6 MA's i mention above... this is not to say all MA fish or MA Saulosi are bad.

As far as i am aware MA get their stocks from all over the place trade and private breeders plue surplus fish therefore they can have a mixture of quality of fish in, you must take it on a case by case basis....

if you see good ones then thats great, but i wouldlike to pass comment from my own PERSONAL FIRST HAND experience afterall i've probably bought over 50 saulosi in the last 18 months from outlets such as the MA stores already mentioned and other places not mentioned that 95% of them although are yellow and look good when 1-1.5" fry grow up to only have found a handful of good ones...

When buying a puppy you always want to se the parents, I'm kind of at this stage with particular species of Malawi's now as a result of this..

Like it says in my signature, i'm offering my opinion, please don't get offended by it....

and lastly, i would like to say that i feel that you are particulalry short and sarky with answers and responses to my posts and i would like to ask you to please stop.

There are all issuess that people agree/disagree but please on points that you don't agree with me on, don't make it personal.

so what if we differ in opinion - thats fine this is a forum where those opinions can or should be aired freely without making it personal.

I would also hate to think that maybe this is becuase of things which may have happened on aonther forum.

Drucki if this is a forum then I am also entitled to my opinion, so kindly have the courtesy to not tell me what I can and cannot post. I hardly think that my response was personal to you. I was merely trying to stick up for MA and poor Ash.

Your opinions are put over in a very arrogant and bullish way. Comes across as I am right and you are wrong mate. Just putting at the end of your posts that it's your opinion and take it or leave is does not then give you the right to be so condescending to some posters....imho. :)

I'm my own opinon I'm passing on my own expierences which people can either consider or ignore it's a free country after all, it's interesting that over the past week or so you are the only person who is commenting about my posting and no one else is saying anything? do you think that i am offending you imparticular  ??

If you want fact's i'll give you facts or post facts?

Over the past 18 months i've weasted over £350 of hard earned money from outlets including 6 MA shops on fish which although appear lovely in their little glass tank that when they grow on they are not of the quality that you 'thought' you were getting from the fry.

The truth of the matter is now i would not unless absolutely desperate buy from these type of shops for malawi fish, they are just not set up properly to deal with them in my own opinion, based on my own experiences (how many disclaimers do i have to post in my posts these days to make sure that i do not offend you or think that you think i am trying to enforce mty views on others??)

I'm not going over old ground again as this is turning into a flame which defeat's any purpose what so ever

I'll apologise if any of my comments are condesending or appear condesending to those people involved directly . . . . . and regarding Ash's Saulosi, i've not commented on what his fish are like or what his local MA quality of saulosi are like..........

.....i would like to think that in the same matter if you wish to critisie my points and comments then you would also do this of others ie. what is the difference between the 'cautious' approach that i have posted compared to say 'ash's ' statement that i should get my fish from MA as and i quote directly ''the quality is great''............say in 12 months time shall people who have spent their money on fish from MA send him the bill for these if they have not turned out great ?

The point of a forum is so people can listen to everyones points of view and then make their OWN mind up about things.

I hope that this settles this once and for all becuase it is spoiling this forum. :D
