I was just wondering when your protien skimmer starts to collect protien and organic matter mines been on for little over month still havn't got anything but my tanks a little over two months old the fish i have in the tank are at the bottom.

Your tank needs to be not only cycled, but mature for a skimmer to work efficiently.

My tank was running for nine months before I added my skimmer.

You don't have enough dissolved organics yet for it to collect.

really? I've been cycling my tank for about 2 weeks now and I finally plugged my skimmer in 5 days ago and had to empty the cup yesterday. The cup was full of nasty crap lookin water  So what was that then...Should I turn it off for a while?

OK. I'll clear it up a little...

You can hook up the skimmer right off, but do not be surprised if nothing happens.

Depending on what kind of critters you have, size of the tank, die off from the live rock, feeding etc....can all vary the outcome. IT is like one of those how long is a piece of string questions.

The comforting thing is, you can't overskim a tank. So skim away....

Mine "didnt work" for a year... till I learned that I could raise the level of the water.... :*)

You can make it skim wet or dry and such... might want to find some one who successfully uses your same skimmer and ask them for tips.

GL is right. And, if you are willing to replace a little more water a week skim a little wetter than dry.
