Hi there,

What protein skimmer would be recommended for a 170litre reef tank and what about a 300litre reef tank?

No aint got a sump. The 170litre tank is mine and I am using a HOB refugium on it and was wondering if a protein skimmer would be worth getting?

The 300litre tank is my mates and currently he is only using live rock as bio filteration and was hoping to get a skimmer?

I have a 175 litre tank with no sump and use a Deltec MCE600 that works great but it isn,t silent ( but I think you will not get a silent HOB )

What about a Deltec MCE300 or a v2 skim 400 protein skimmer? Which one would be better recommended? Also would I really need a skimmer if I have a HOB refugium containing chaeto?

The deltec is a much better bet than the V2 IMO

I had a V2 800 which lasted a couple of months before packing up - it was replaced by TMC and the 2nd one died as well :(

I was chatting to the owner of a fish shop today and he was complaining about the build quality on the V2's and how many he had sold that had problems

From everything I've read, the MCE 300 is much more user-friendly yet slightly more pricey while they V2 400 is not user-friendly but a little cheaper...

So a Deltec MCE300 it is then, so is it advisable to have the skimmer working alongside my chaeto in my refugium?

What about my mates 300litre tank? What skimmer is recommended for a tank that size?
