Always wondered just how Bichir is pronounced.

I've heard it said a few different ways...What is the correct pronunciation of it?

Not sure this belongs in the scientific section, but i would pronounce it 'bish-eer'. I have also heard it being pronounced 'Biker' but i'm not sure that is correct.

I didn't really know where this belonged...So I figured it'd go in here...

If it belongs somewhere else...a mod will move it no doubt.

I've heard it pronounced 'By-sher/cher' as well as bish-eer and biker too...Thus why I'm confused :D

I have no clue but remembered this being discussed a while back.

WHY BICHIR?

The French most likely pronounced it as phonetically as possible to the orginal native word and came up with bee-sheer as a pronunciation and spelled 'bichir'. Since this would be the name of these fish for
several years until they were scientifically described and put into the proper family it became an accepted common name.

However the correct English pronunciation is up for grabs. Several dictionaries all have their own pronunciation including the below:
bee cher
beech er
bikir
biker
bercheer
bi cher
bir chir is common in England
Also known by the common name lobed fin pike, dinosaur eel.

Bircher sounds best and is easiest to say.Bichir is spelt like this half the time anyway.

Call them Polypterus (Po-lip-ter-uss) much easier, and everyone I know that uses that horrid common name calls them 'bish-ear'

which when you look at the names of these fish, there is only on bichir in the genus and its Polypteurs bichir bichir... :good:
