ok, is it pronounced "playtees" or "platties" ??

I've heard it both ways. Some say it with the long A, some with the short. I don't think there really is a 'correct' way.

i'm going to have to say "platties" although i'm not 100%. i've just always heard it that way....maybe a poll.......hahahaha that should clear things up.

actually it is pronounced
southern platyfish or Xiphophorus maculatus

seriously it is platt (as in hair) ee (platt-ee)
