durring roll call this morning my daughter notice that three of the four neon tetras we have were missing. upon further investigation we found them motionless in the plants. they are alive but totaly motionless except for short rapid gill movments. If the plant they are in gets moved they just float untill they land somewhere else. Last night they all were fine. All the other fish in the tank ( 4 albino cory, two plattys, three white clouds) are swimming just fine as is the fourth tetra. We did a water test and the amonia and nitrite levels are at zero. I do not have a nitrate kit yet but, we did a 50% water change just in case. What has me bothered is that what ever is causing this has not affected the fourth tetra in the tank. any help would be appreciated.

Rapid gill movement can be a sign of Gill Flukes.

can you be a bit more descriptive of the symptoms?

not realy sure there are many symptoms. Unfortunatly I am not at home now, got to do this work thing. When I left them this morning they were for all intents, dead. There was no movment except for what seem like small rapid gill movments. Their mouth were also moving. It just seems like their respirations are short and labored. There is absolutly no fin movment or attemts at it that I can see.

From what you have said I would take it as the most possible problem is gill flukes, it is a parasitic infection and needs treating with an anti-parasite medication. I personally used Sterazin but there are many others on the market.
Good luck.
