Hi

I am posting this on behalf of a friend who approached me about a problem with their two goldfish. I have been told that the problem started with what looked like the mouth had been dusted with icing sugar. Over a couple of days this turned to a black/purplish looking marking in the same area that has gradually got bigger. The same coloured marking can also be found on the side of the same fish and has also appeared on the head of the other goldfish that shares the same tank. Does anybody have any idea as to what this could be? I have attached a picture to show the worst affected fish.
Thanks
Matt

I'd imagine that it was a protozoan. The white was the cysts, and they bursted damaging the tissue, making it a brusied purple/blue. I would try some parasite meds.

What are the water stats in the tank?
It could be ammonia burn. Or some other type of burn.

What size is the tank and how many of what type of fish are in it?

Thanks for your responses. I dont have any water stats at the moment, but I am popping round tomorrow night so will take my test kit and get some readings
