Nice fish. But you really shouldn't buy stuff before reading up on them!

Essentially a medium-sized (~20 cm) omnivore from Asia with strong predatory tendencies. Basic care much like a large climbing perch on an oscar. Hardy, and essentially peaceful though will eat anything it can swallow.

No surprise really. Matt Clarke did a nice commentary on this species for PFK, over here. They have had these fish at Wildwoods for the last year or so. Lovely animals, just not especially colourful, so they don't sell quickly.

Yeah I know - impulse buy because I'd never seen one before

Thanks for the info

I got a shock when I got home and found it was a nandid and I remember what a vorasious predoror the Nandus Nandus I had was but this seams to be rather less dangerous with a much smaller mouth :)

The genus also appears to be more omnivorous than the typical nandid, consuming insects, algae, seeds, and fruits as well as small fish. Although a different species, the entry for Pristolepis fasciata is particularly informative. Click on the "food items" link on a Fishbase page for details.

Cheers, Neale
