Good afternoon I hope everyone is doing well. I was curious about when to add dechlorinator, for example I have a 65g and the jugs are getting old lol I usually just drain out my window to the flower bed and then use my jugs (5 gallons 🙃) and fill them up and add my de-chlorinator and then add the water back.

I want to know if I can just add my de-chlorinator to the tank first then use a hose to fill my tank back up? Or do I have to add the de-chlorinator to the water before it goes in?

Yes, But you must add a dose for the volume of the whole tank, instead of the volume you are changing.

No problem doing that. Chloramine is the biggest problem and make sure you dose accordingly.

If you're doing small water changes you can go lower. But that rule stands. And anything over 50% needs a full dose.

Okay, that makes me feel better. I'm tired of filling these jugs when I have the kitchen sink nearby, lol. A new hose, of course; make sure it's rinsed out before using it. I'll make sure I dose for the whole volume for 50% and above water changes. For 25% water changes, I'll do half of the 65 dose or probably little more.

These products have been proven for decades, And overdosing a tank to the point of affecting the fish...

Would be absolutely ludicrous.

It's stable and even very old jugs... just keep on going.

I have been dosing the tank and filling the water directly from the tap since joining this forum 4 years ago without any issues. I will warn you that you do have to watch the temperature especially on larger changes. I pull my water from the laundry room where I have now installed a temperature regulator which makes the job even easier.

I do that. I do a 50% water change and add the amount of Prime for the complete volume of tank size. I add the Prime to the tank before adding the water. I use a Python hose so I can remove and add water.

When adding water, I make sure to turn on the hot and cold faucets and verify the temperature is a little warmer than the tank water I am adding to.

I was hoping to get a Python tubing system to fill my tank directly from the sink, which is kinda why i made this post lol. I'm glad to hear I can dose my Prime in the tank and then add water; that will definitely make things easier instead of 5 gallons at a time.

I also usually use a temperature probe and check the water temperature coming from the faucet before adding it to the tank helps match the temp
