A couple of days ago I’ve noticed that my female bristlenose catfish had expanded in size the stomach has become increasingly larger. She could be pregnant although she’s never had babies before and I don’t know how pregnancy would influence the size and behaviour of the fish. I’ve noticed that she became a little individual and less active. I’ve also noticed that the rectum turned a little red.

If she is pregnant and is expecting babies I would like to ensure the survival, could you please give me a couple of tips on what I should do in order for the babies to survive.

I have about a 60L tank with number of tropical fish

2 mollys
2 plattys
2 Clown Loaches
2 Swords
4 bristlenose catfish (including the pregnant one)
1 Goldfish

I have a 20L fish tank that is currently not in use … do u recommend separating the catfish before she gives birth or perhaps babied after the birth or separate some of the more aggressive fish? Please advise me.

Kind Regards,

I really can't help you here, but I'm sure that CFC can so I'm moving this to catfish

hi there. I have a male bristlenose (medusa) and so I did some reading about him. The male is the one that raises the babies and the article said that's why they have the bristle to circulate and feed the babies. Other than that, I think you need to look them up or you might lose all those adorable babies.

ohhh cool so i live it in it's environment and just separate the more aggressive tropical fish? My male is very lazy :) His name is Bruce and he just likes to hang out on the plant B)

When Bristlenose breed the female lays lots of orange eggs normally in a cave or under some wood, Somewhere out of the way. The male is the one whos cares for the eggs and will not leave them alone until they are free swimming. Most peoples first sign of a spawn is when the male is not seen for a while as he is minding the eggs. The female will not care for the eggs. The best way to ensure survival is to set up a small tank with some bog wood in it and as soon as the fry are swimming free catch as many as you can. The fry will still have their yoke sack connected until they use it up then they must be fed, Slices of cucumber or courgette is perfect. Good luck

thanks dude .... really helped me out here ... i am still trying to work out if she is pregnent of not ... anyways i am posting a sepatate thread for this one ... i will put the wood in as u advised and a slice of a carrot :) thanks again ...
