Ok so as of a couple minutes ago I arrived home from the pet store. I had bought 2 Platys. I was dumb enough to forget to ask the gender. I arrived home showing my family the fish, they asked me if the yellow one was pregnant. I took a look at her and shure enough her belly has droped and she was very wide. I have a 37 gallon fresh water tank and currently do not have to many fish in it. So I was just wondering if she is pregnat and if so when the fry would arrive. I have never had my fish have fry so I am totally new the breeding process so any tip would be helpfull. I will load tvery bad pictures in a second by the way sorry but they were taken on my phone and the fish are still in the bag ( floting currently ) so the pictures are not that great. Thank you!!

Pictures in later post.

You could do one of two things.

1.) Add some thick fake plants or some java moss so the babies have places to hide and hope for some survivors. This is what I do with my tank. Platys breed like rabbits and produce more babies than rabbits. You really cannot save them all without having a plan to rehome or get a bigger tank. They will overpopulate extremely fast.

2.) Get another tank to act as a fry tank and try to catch the babies as you see them. Transfer some of yoru filter media to the filter of your fry tank for insta cycling.

I personally prefer option one, as I have 6 females and 1 male (lost a male the otehr day :( ) so I slways have pregnant females. Because i do not intervene, I am only rehoming babies every few months. Best of luck to you.

I've found the best way for fry to survive is having a lot of floating plant and hiding places for them. I used a large flat piece of slate in the tank so the substrate is higher at both ends but a piece in the middle where only them can fit through.
You will soon know if she's pregnant as it doesn't take long for them to give birth, 25-30 days is the average.

Yay I got the pictures on!! Again sorry for the quality. It is the yellowish one.

She looks pregnant, but im not sure. I only breed guppies, and im fairly new to that. ^_^ If she is, when the fry are born, if you dont want to go through the hassle of rehoming them, just let them alone in the tank and see if they survive. If you dont have many fish, most of them probably will survive, but if you get more fish they will most likely get eaten.

Ok thank you!!I do not have to many fish currently so I might get some more. I want some to survive. Can anyone sortov predict her due date?!

We have some decent threads here for both determining the gender of your fish and deciding what their present state of fry development might be. The gender determination thread is here. The stage of fry development can be found here and includes lots of pictures.
